Kodi IPTV Setup: PVR Simple Client Configuration

Kodi IPTV Setup: PVR Simple Client Configuration

Setup Guides 2026-05-01 IPTVPlaylist Team 8 min read

Kodi is the most powerful open-source media center software available. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS (with some limitations), and Raspberry Pi. While Kodi is not an IPTV player out of the box, the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on transforms it into a capable live TV platform with EPG support, channel grouping, and recording capabilities.

This guide walks through the complete process of configuring Kodi for IPTV using the PVR IPTV Simple Client. We cover Kodi installation, add-on setup, M3U playlist configuration, EPG integration, and performance tuning. The process takes about 15-20 minutes and results in a fully functional live TV system within Kodi's media center environment.

Prerequisites

You need Kodi version 20 (Nexus) or later installed on your device. Download Kodi from the official website (kodi.tv) for Windows, macOS, or Linux, or from the Google Play Store for Android. You also need your IPTV subscription credentials: an M3U playlist URL and an XMLTV EPG URL. IPTVPlaylist provides both with every subscription plan. Get yours at /pricing.

Kodi's PVR IPTV Simple Client works with M3U playlists. It does not natively support Xtream Codes API connections. If you prefer Xtream Codes, you can generate an M3U URL from your Xtream Codes credentials using the standard URL format: http://server:port/get.php?username=YOUR_USER&password=YOUR_PASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts.

Step 1: Installing PVR IPTV Simple Client

Open Kodi. From the home screen, navigate to Settings (the gear icon in the top left). Select Add-ons from the settings menu. Choose Install from Repository. Select Kodi Add-on Repository (this is the official repository pre-installed with Kodi). Navigate to PVR Clients. Scroll down to find PVR IPTV Simple Client. Select it and click Install.

The add-on downloads and installs in a few seconds. You may see a prompt asking to enable the add-on. Click Yes. If Kodi asks to restart, do so.

If PVR IPTV Simple Client does not appear in the repository, your Kodi installation may be missing the PVR add-on package. On Linux, install the kodi-pvr-iptvsimple package through your package manager. On other platforms, verify you are running an official Kodi build from kodi.tv.

Step 2: Configuring the M3U Playlist

After installation, navigate to Settings > Add-ons > My Add-ons > PVR Clients > PVR IPTV Simple Client. Click Configure to open the add-on settings.

On the General tab, set the Location to Remote Path (Internet Address). In the M3U Playlist URL field, enter your M3U URL. For IPTVPlaylist subscribers, this URL is in your welcome email. Set the M3U Playlist Cache to Local Storage to avoid re-downloading the full playlist on every Kodi restart. Set the M3U Playlist Cache Duration to match your provider's update frequency. 24 hours works well for most providers.

Under the Channels tab, configure channel numbering. Channel Numbers Mode can be set to 1-based (channels numbered sequentially starting from 1) or from M3U (uses any channel numbering embedded in the playlist). The 1-based option is cleaner for most setups.

Step 3: Configuring EPG (Electronic Program Guide)

Switch to the EPG Settings tab in the PVR IPTV Simple Client configuration. Set Location to Remote Path (Internet Address). Enter your XMLTV EPG URL in the XMLTV URL field. This URL is provided by your IPTV service alongside your M3U URL.

Set the EPG Cache to Local Storage. Set the EPG Time Shift to 0 unless your EPG data timestamps are in a different timezone than your Kodi system time. Set Cache Duration to 12 or 24 hours. Click OK to save all settings.

Kodi will prompt you to restart. Restart Kodi. On relaunch, the PVR system begins downloading your M3U playlist and EPG data. This process runs in the background. You can monitor progress through the notification area (top right) or in System > Events.

The initial data load for a large playlist (20,000+ channels) with full EPG can take 5-15 minutes depending on your device and internet speed. Subsequent launches are faster because cached data is loaded from local storage.

Step 4: Accessing Live TV in Kodi

Once the PVR system finishes loading, IPTV channels appear in Kodi's TV section. From the home screen, click on TV in the left sidebar. You will see options for Channels (channel list grouped by category), TV Guide (EPG grid), Recordings, and Timers.

The Channels view shows all channels organized by the group-title categories from your M3U playlist. Navigate groups using the left sidebar, browse channels in the main panel, and select a channel to start playback. During playback, pressing the Info button (I key on keyboard) shows current program details from the EPG.

The TV Guide provides a traditional grid EPG. Navigate using directional keys. The guide displays 2 hours of programming by default (adjustable in PVR settings). Selecting a currently-airing program starts playback. Selecting a future program creates a timer/reminder.

Step 5: Customizing Channel Groups

Kodi's PVR system supports channel group management. Navigate to TV > Channels, open the sidebar, and select a channel group. To create custom groups, go to Settings > PVR & Live TV > Channel Groups. You can create new groups and assign channels to them.

You can also hide entire channel groups that are irrelevant to you. In the Channel Groups settings, disable groups you never watch. This speeds up navigation when browsing through categories and reduces visual clutter.

Step 6: Performance Optimization

Kodi's IPTV performance depends on several settings that are not configured optimally by default.

Network Buffer: Navigate to Settings > Player > Videos. Set the Cache buffer size to at least 20-60 MB (the default is often too low for IPTV streams). Higher buffer values reduce playback interruptions on unstable connections but increase memory usage.

Video Decoder: Under Settings > Player > Videos, ensure hardware acceleration is enabled. This offloads video decoding to your GPU, reducing CPU load and improving playback smoothness. The exact setting name varies by platform (DXVA2 on Windows, MediaCodec on Android, OMX on Raspberry Pi).

EPG Performance: If the TV Guide takes a long time to navigate, reduce the number of days of EPG data stored. In PVR IPTV Simple Client settings > EPG Settings, set Past Days to 1 and Future Days to 3. This reduces the EPG dataset that Kodi needs to index and render.

Skin Selection: The default Estuary skin is relatively lightweight, but some third-party skins add significant overhead. If you experience slow navigation, switch to Estuary or Estouchy (the touch-optimized variant) to minimize UI processing overhead.

Step 7: Advanced Configuration

Kodi's advancedsettings.xml file provides granular control over caching, buffering, and network behavior. This file does not exist by default. You must create it in your Kodi userdata folder (the path varies by OS: %APPDATA%\\kodi\\userdata on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Kodi/userdata on macOS, ~/.kodi/userdata on Linux).

Key settings for IPTV optimization in advancedsettings.xml include: memorysize (read buffer size in bytes, set to 52428800 for 50MB), readfactor (read ahead multiplier, set to 4 for IPTV), and buffermode (set to 1 to buffer all network filesystems). These settings can dramatically improve playback stability for IPTV streams.

Kodi IPTV Add-on Alternatives

PVR IPTV Simple Client is the most straightforward option, but Kodi offers alternatives. PVR Stalker Client connects to Stalker/MAG portal servers. The IPTV Merge add-on combines multiple M3U and EPG sources into one. Catch-up TV add-ons extend Kodi's PVR system with timeshift capabilities for providers that support it.

For most users, PVR IPTV Simple Client with a single M3U and EPG source from a provider like IPTVPlaylist is the simplest and most reliable configuration. Adding complexity with multiple sources increases the chance of conflicts and configuration issues.

Troubleshooting Kodi IPTV Issues

No channels appear after setup: Verify the M3U URL works by testing it in a web browser. Check that PVR IPTV Simple Client is enabled (Settings > Add-ons > My Add-ons > PVR Clients). Restart Kodi after making configuration changes. Check the Kodi log (Settings > System > Logging > enable Event Log) for specific error messages.

Channels appear but do not play: This is typically a stream format issue. Some Kodi installations lack required codecs. On Linux, install the full codec package for your distribution. On Windows and macOS, the official Kodi build includes all necessary codecs. Also try toggling hardware acceleration on/off.

EPG shows no data: Confirm the XMLTV URL is correct and accessible. Wait for the full EPG processing cycle (check Events log for completion). Verify the EPG file's channel IDs match the tvg-id attributes in your M3U playlist.

Buffering during playback: Increase the cache buffer size in Player settings. Create or modify advancedsettings.xml with increased memorysize and readfactor values. Use a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. Verify your internet speed meets the minimum (25 Mbps for HD, 50 Mbps for 4K).
